The first lie I told was a small one, delivered with the calm of someone who had practiced in the mirror. “It’s just good lighting,” I said, when Maribel from the third floor leaned in too close at the elevator and squinted at my face like she was searching for a seam. The fluorescent bulb above us hummed, cruel and unflattering, and still she couldn’t find what she wanted—those thin creases she’d watched deepen on me last winter as my mother’s hospital bills arrived in thick white envelopes.

Maribel’s eyes narrowed, then widened with something like offense. “You look… rested,” she said, as though accusing me of theft.

Rested. I almost laughed. I’d been living on black coffee and whatever was on sale, sleeping with my phone on my chest so I could answer calls from nurses in the night.
