She held a glass of wine and listened to men with watchbands worth more than scholarships talk about charities with the ease of people buying new shoes. Marisol reached out, stopping a hand’s span from his shoulder, afraid to touch him and confirm he was real. Her eyes burned. The city lights below began to wake, one by one, indifferent and gorgeous.

“What else did she tell you?” Marisol asked, voice barely a thread.
